The UP Jazz Ensemble is a university based jazz group founded in 1977. Prof. Rayben Maigue, the musical director of the group is an accomplished trumpet player, composer and arranger. He is also the present chairman of the UP College of Music Winds and Percussion Department. He has helped establish the group then and now and continue to widen jazz appreciation in the country. For his work in the field of jazz, he and the group have garnered awards three of which are worth mentioning.
In 1989, The First City Jazz Achievement Award was given them for their meritorious contributions to the Field of Philippine New Age and Jazz Music.
In 1999 by Petron Corporation for being the Prime Movers of Jazz in the Phil; for 21 years of virtuosity as a group; and for being dedicated leaders in developing Filipino talent in the most diverse field of music, thus providing the Philippines and the world a life-long source of artists who are aware of their unique mission to instill a deep love for what is noble and exemplary about being Filipino.
In 2010 Prof. Maigue was awarded by the University of the Philippines Board of Regents on recommendation of the university president the UP Arts Productivity Award for his work in the field of jazz, for his highly varied repertoire of both Filipino and traditional contemporary works.
The Band has 30 members consisting of students and alumni of the UP College of Music. The group’s repertoire ranges from well known works of composers and arrangers like Duke Ellington, Glenn Miller, Sammy Nestico, George Gershwin and Count Basie as well as contemporary composers such as the Beatles, John Williams, Dave Gruisin and even Pinoy jazz works of Filipino composers like Angel Pena, Richie Quirino and Jon Palacio.
Aside from the main group, smaller groups of about three to ten members are active professionally. In effect, the UP Jazz Ensemble has served as a training ground for student arrangers, composers and conductors and has spawned many of our country’s young professional jazz musicians like the Ugoy Ugoy Band, Side A, Brass Monkeys, Parliament Syndicate and the AMP Big Band.
