Besides her popular surname and familiar face, Claudine Barretto was arguably not that remarkable compare to her talented batch mates in Ang TV like Jolina Magdangal, Rossellle Nava, Lindsay Custodio, Jan Marini, Rica Peralejo, Guila Alvarez, and Angelu De Leon. It’s because she couldn’t sing and dance well like them. However, Barretto proves through the years that even in just concentrating on acting she would emerge as one of the brightest stars of her generation.
Claudine, the Optimum Star and Versatile Actress
It’s a fact that Gretchen Barretto started decade early in showbiz so it wasn’t hard for Claudine to establish her career. Thus while her fellow young stars then were waiting to do a movie, she’s already paired with Isko Moreno in some films under Seiko Films.
Meanwhile, the known Optimum Star was first busy doing hit TV sitcoms such as Home A Long the Riles (top billed by the late Comedy King Dolphy) and Oki Doki Dok ( starring Aga Muhlach) before she ventured to drama shows.Her career catapulted to stardom when she portrayed rich girl Olivia “Via” Pereira opposite her reel and real– the late actor Rico Yan.
Since that she became the lead star of top rated primetime series in ABS-CBN including Saan Ka Man Naroroon, Sa Dulo ng Walang Hanggan, Ikaw Ang Lahat sa Akin, Iisa Pa Lamang, Walang Kapalit and first Fantaserye, Marina. Meanwhile, if today’s generation has KathNiel, LizQuen, JaDine, and AlDub; Rico and Claudine’s tandem was pit against love teams of Judy Ann Santos and Wowie de Guzman, and Angelu de Leon and Bobby Andrews.
Somehow, Barretto was hailed as the next Vilma Santos because of her versatility and variety of roles she could play. Claudine played the stubborn daughter of Vilma in Anak, step-daughter of Sharon Cuneta in Madrasta and rival sister of Maricel Soriano in Soltera.
In Calvento Files the movie, she played an epileptic teen who was gang raped, killed and thrown in a deep well. On the other hand, she acted as liberated and misinterpreted girl who’s longing for Rico’s character attention in Dahil Mahal Na Mahal Kita.
The Trials and Come Back
Also a newsmaker, Claudine also experienced blows of intrigues that mostly about her personal life. First, when allegedly broke up Rico before he died and secondly, when surprised everyone when she transferred to GMA. However, the mauling incident where she, her estranged husband Raymart Santiago, and broadcaster Mon Tulfo were involved became so controversial that arguably affected her career. Then, her legal bouts with Santiago also tested not only their relationships, but also her ties with her siblings.
Last year, Claudine returned in the big screen through Etiquette for the Mistresses and in small screen via Bakit Manipis Ang Ulap where she paired with Diether Ocampo and Cesar Montano.
